Small and medium-sized enterprises dominate the economy of Germany’s Capital Region Berlin-Brandenburg. As the local companies are highly specialised and flexible, many have developed themselves to global market leaders in their specific sector. Thereby, the region’s firms have increasingly become interesting partners for Chinese companies. Exports from both Federal States Berlin and Brandenburg to China have been steadily growing. This is especially true for innovative industries such as aviation and technology, medical technology, biotechnology, ICT, as well as the energy and environmental technology.
Three times the State of Brandenburg was given the “Leitstern” or “Lodestar”, an award for that German Federal State with the most progressive renewable energy policy and the best practice. Berlin and Potsdam have become a model region for electric vehicles, with strong scientific research potentials. With more than 40 universities and colleges and more that 100 research establishments the region Berlin-Brandenburg has the highest concentration of research institutions in Europe. Therefore, more and more research department of innovative companies such as Huawei Technologies are located there.
Due to the ideal location at the “New Silk Road” logistics hubs such as Grossbeeren or Frankfurt/Oder have attracted many Chinese companies engaged in trade into the region. However, a growing number of Chinese entrepreneurs is now investing in manufacturing and high-tech companies. Chinese investment has a long tradition in Berlin-Brandenburg. As early as in 2003, Welz Gas Cylinder Ltd., a manufacturer of compressed gas cylinders with a history of more than 100 years, has been acquired by investors from Shanghai.
