The DCW Region Northern Germany includes the states of Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the city states of Hamburg and Bremen.

The economic structure of the region, is emphasized by its traditional maritime connections of international trade. As a sister city of Shanghai, Hamburg alone supports 900 business, that share economic relations with China. There are 400 Chinese companies headquartered in the city. As the Hanseatic city of Europe, it the center of several large Chinese companies, including Baosteel and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC). China is the main trading partner for the port of Hamburg. In 2011, one-third of the volume handled came from China, or was to be bound for the Chinese market.

As a sister city of Dalian, Bremen contains a concentration of logistics infrastructure, thus becomes an attractive location for import and export-based companies. Currently there is a rising trend of about 100 Chinese companies that are active in the city state. Some 200 companies from Bremen maintain business contacts in China. Besides the trade and logistics sector, the engineering, environmental, energy, aviation and space technology sector is also important.

In recent years, Schleswig-Holstein’s exports to China have regularly recorded double-digit increases. Particularly noteworthy, is the importance of China in the industries of medicine, wind power, automotive technlology and the food industry. Therefore the cooperation and partnership with the Zhejiang Province has become a focus of economic relations.

In recent years, China’s economic exchanges in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have increased. Among the commodities traded, there is a more refined emphasis in the fields of renewable energy, environmental technology, and the maritime industry.
