In Germany, the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main region is one of the major metropolitan areas, accounting for 8.4% of the total German GDP. The Frankfurt/Rhine-Main metropolitan area is not only attractive because of its high economic potential, but also because of its great infrastructural facilities and central location within Europe. Around 200 foreign banks are located in Frankfurt, the third leading financial center in Europe. Among them are not only the five biggest Chinese banks (e.g. Bank of China), but branch offices of two other big Chinese banks as well. Also, Frankfurt is the third largest exhibition site in the world. Regarding the number of foreign visitors and exhibitors, Frankfurt trade fair is ranging far above the national average.

Since 1985, Hesse and China share several sister cities and provinces. These partnerships primarily serve to promote cooperation between companies and promote settlements of vocational education and training. Economic cooperations focus on environmental technology, tourism marketing, and cultural exchange. The Rhine-Main region has a well developed China network. Overall, more than 450 Chinese companies and institutions have already been established in the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main region. Over 10’000 Chinese citizens are living in the region, with a growing trend. Apart from branch offices of the biggest Chinese airlines, there are as well companies from the automotive, engineering, pharma/biotech, consumer goods, chemistry, and renewable energies industries. In the chamber district of IHK Frankfurt alone there are 402 Chinese companies. The largest Chinese Consulate General of the Republic of China in Europe, is located in Frankfurt.
