DCW | Region Shanghai

With a population of approximately 24.8 million, Shanghai is one of China’s leading economic centers and one of Asia’s most important hubs for finance, manufacturing and innovation. By the end of 2025, the city was home to around 3.5 million registered business entities. Shanghai’s GDP reached Renminbi 5.67 trillion (about US-Dollar 814 billion), representing 5.4 percent annual growth.

German-Chinese cooperation is a key driver of Shanghai’s economy. German companies are particularly active in the automotive, mechanical engineering, chemicals, medical technology, logistics, environmental technology, and digital manufacturing sectors. At the same time, Chinese and German partners are expanding collaboration in emerging industries such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, semiconductors, and green technologies. Shanghai offers an outstanding innovation ecosystem, world-class research institutions, and an excellent manufacturing base for international cooperation.
