The metropolis of Shanghai is China's largest economic centre. The city is located in the east of the country and covers an area of 6,340.5 square kilometres. In 2022, the population is 25.6 million, making Shanghai the city with the most inhabitants in China. Moreover, the gross domestic product in 2019 was 4.32 trillion Renminbi and the per-capita income was 73,615 Renminbi. Shanghai has been a trading city for over a thousand years and has been one of China's major trading centres since the 1840s. The number of trading partners has increased from 20 countries at the beginning of China's reform and opening up to over 200 countries and regions today. With the deep sea port on the Yangshan Islands, two international airports and a dense railway network, Shanghai is well connected to national and international freight traffic. Yangshan is the largest container port in the world, handling around 31.7 million standard containers per year. Large shipyards around Shanghai make the city one of the leading production centres for ships of various classes. Today, Shanghai is the third most important financial centre, surpassed only by New York and London.
With the state-owned Shanghai Automotive (SAIC), a joint venture partner of VW, the city has become the main location of the automotive industry. In addition, many chemical, textile and pharmaceutical companies as well as companies from the steel production and mechanical engineering sectors are located in Shanghai. In August 2022, a comprehensive EU-China cross-border acceleration programme for European healthcare innovators was launched through a collaboration between Medical Valley Solutions, Convergence Partners and Siemens Healthineers with the Zhangjiang Group in Shanghai.
